Upcoming STARS Program: Proper Logging Techniques

Comments Off on Upcoming STARS Program: Proper Logging Techniques

Attention Ham Radio Enthusiasts and STARS Club Members,

Our next club meeting will feature an informative and practical program you won’t want to miss. Stu, our Vice President, will be leading a session on one of the most important—and sometimes overlooked—parts of amateur radio operation: proper logging techniques.

Logging may seem straightforward, but doing it correctly can make all the difference. Stu will share best practices for accurate and efficient recordkeeping, whether you’re logging casual QSOs, contest contacts, or special event operations. Expect real-world tips, helpful examples, and maybe even a few tricks to make your logs cleaner and your operating smoother.

📅 Event Details:

  • Date: November 13th, 2025

  • Time: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

  • Location:  Bridgeview Community Center

  • 7902 S Oketo Avenue, Bridgeview. IL. 60455

Why It Matters

Good logging is more than a regulatory requirement—it’s the story of your amateur radio journey. It keeps your records organized, supports award tracking, and ensures you’re ready for any future verification or QSL requests. Whether you log by hand, use software, or a mix of both, this program will give you something valuable to take home.

Join us for an evening of learning, sharing, and connecting with fellow radio enthusiasts. Bring your questions, your experiences, and maybe even a logbook or two for discussion.

We’ll see you there!

President’s Update August 04, 2025

Comments Off on President’s Update August 04, 2025

First, I’d like to introduce myself to those who do not know me. My name is Dennis, KC9DSP, and I was elected president of our radio club. I’m also the Coordinator of our VE team. We have a very strong VE team, and I have been adding VEs weekly. Let me know if you’re interested in becoming a VE.

Second, we’ve been making changes to the club. If you haven’t attended a meeting or checked our webpage recently, please do so. We try to have a program at every meeting. The meeting time has been changed to 7 PM to accommodate these programs.

Third, we started the year with 21 members. My goal was to reach 50 members by the end of my term. We are currently at 42 paid members and growing. A few of you have not paid dues for this year yet. Please remit your dues to continue your membership.

Fourth, we are about to celebrate 50 years as a club. I think that’s fantastic, and we should start planning a celebration. Please share your ideas and suggestions.

Fifth, I have appointed Bob McDonald, N9WDV, as Membership Coordinator. We are updating our roster and member list on the website. I am missing some emails, so those individuals may not receive this message. Hopefully, Bob and I can reach them. We also have many missing phone numbers. If you want your email or phone number to be private, please respond to this message through our contact page. We believe the Membership Coordinator and Treasurer should have contact information for our members. Additionally, please let us know if you are a current ARRL member.

Lastly, I want to thank the other officers and the board members. I definitely could not have accomplished what we have without your help.

Attention Ham Radio Enthusiasts and STARS Club Members,

We’re back with another exciting evening of learning and skill-building, and this time we’re diving into a topic many of us have heard about—but few have mastered: Surface Mount Device (SMD) soldering.

Featured Presenter: Glenn Bushey, KC9BPY

Glenn will guide us through the basics of SMD soldering, including tools, techniques, and tips to help demystify (and reduce frustration) when working with surface-mount components. Whether you’re a hands-on builder, a curious tinkerer, or someone just looking to expand your skills, this presentation will be packed with practical value.

Event Details:

  • Date: August 14, 2025

President’s Update July 12, 2025

Comments Off on President’s Update July 12, 2025

As most of you know, we have been busy here at STARS Radio Club. My goal as president was to revitalize our club. I wanted to increase membership and make our meetings meaningful. Our club has a long history and has been around for 60 years. We have been successful at growth. We now have 37 paid members. We still have six previous members who have not submitted their dues. I have spoken to a few, and they are planning on renewing, but it just slipped their minds. Our membership year starts in June as opposed to January. I like that because when you belong to several clubs, it spreads out your dues obligation. At the beginning of my term, I made my goals known. I hope we reach 50 members by the time my term is up. That is a very achievable goal. Invite a friend who is a ham or someone interested in becoming a ham to visit our meetings. I had someone recently ask why they should join our club. My response started with a simple question: Do you join our nets? Their answer was yes. Well, since they joined our nets, why not join? Your dues are what help keep our repeater maintained. We now have presentations on our meeting nights. We have a new logo and growing participation. My membership goal will only be achieved through the effort and dedication of our club members.

We have several people who stepped up and contributed to making this a great working club. Larry (KB9REV) and Nick (KB9JRG) have joined the board, so we now have a full board. Stu (KD9GHO, our VP) has some great ideas about outreach. Tom (KA9ZXN, our secretary) keeps our minutes up to date and is our awesome net control. Tamme (KC9RFJ, our treasurer) not only keeps our books but also our membership roster. Several members have given presentations. As I said, this has been a team effort. I want to thank all who have made this club what it is. Thank you for your hard work. Hope to see you all at the meeting and hear you on the net.

Field Day is an emergency preparedness exercise for Amateur Radio Operators.

It is an all-weather Event.

Radio stations are set up in the field and powered by batteries, generators, solar panels, or other sources, then connected to portable antennas.

During the exercise, short messages are exchanged with radio stations in the USA and Canada. Voice, Morse code, email, and messages are transmitted and received by radio, without using the Internet.

The purpose of Field Day is to demonstrate the need for Amateur Radio, as this may be the only type of communications available in a real emergency.
